As a member of the female sector of society and a daughter born from normal parents, the fact that I do not wish to marry nags me and keeps me up even in the wee hours of the night. It should be innate to me to want to marry someone, to wish to settle down, become a wife, and a mother. My mother once angrily told me I am stupid not to wish for a grand wedding. It should be, she said, a woman's fulfilment. I only looked at her.
Perhaps it was shocking for her to know that one of her two daughters do not wish for a grand wedding while the other one sees herself walking down the aisle. Perhaps she got the message that I do not wish to marry. I want to tell her that it just so happened that my reasons for not getting married ever far outnumbers the reasons to do other wise. I wanted to tell her these...
1. Money Matters
People should admit that getting married eats money. The venue should be paid, the church asks for "donations", and the reception place must also be paid. The clothes of the bride and groom and the entire entourage are also part of the list to be paid. The pre-wedding seminars to be attended also have fees, even the filing of documents entail expenses. Getting married is just not advisable at a time when money is scarce. While there are free weddings, sponsored by the government and the church, the ceremony is the only thing free there.
2. Weddings consume time
What happens when you are a busy woman and you want to get married. You can get a wedding planner but this planner is sure to disturb you once in a while for questions. What happens now? Do you compromise the job that gives you the funds for the wedding or postpone the wedding altogether?
3. Marriage in the country is sacred
Mother said, marriages are sacred and binding. This means when one of the spouses suddenly wakes up with the feeling of not wanting to be with the other person, there is no way to break it. You break it, you pay it indeed because annulment in the country is tedious and really expensive. You better lose the idea of breaking it up lest you risk your life savings.
4. Relationships today are twisted
yes, mother. I love one man today and hate him the next, or it is the other way around. relationships are just unpredictable and i'd rather not get caught in a web. call me an escapist but i am merely being realistic. People come and go.
5. I can't settle
This is a personal reason that i believe i share with others. When one marries, you have to feel at home with the other person. it is a necessity or else you would wish to leave the situation. unless you are feeling this way towards the person who wishes to marry you, you better not marry. no reason to get yourself in a sticky situation.
